Syntocinon (oxytocin) and caesarean section
All women having caesarean section should be given:
Syntometrine IM is given by the attending midwife if required (see below).
Consider giving iv tranexamic acid (1g) if blood loss is greater than 1000ml.
All women having caesarean section should be given:
- 5 units syntocinon iv immediately after delivery
- 15 units syntocinon in 500ml compound sodium lactate over 30 mins, after the bolus of 5 units
- If requested by the obstetrician: syntocinon infusion (40 units in 500ml compound sodium lactate, rate 125ml/hr via Baxter pump)
