Welcome to our department

We provide anaesthetic, intensive care, and acute pain services to the Clyde region (Paisley, Renfrewshire, Dumbarton and surrounding areas). We have a permanent staff of 24 consultant anaesthetists and intensivists, one associate specialist, and 3 staff grade doctors. Our secretary Vicky Harrigan is an indispensable member of the team. Find more details about who we are on the 'Meet our staff' menu.

We take great pride in our training department. Junior doctors from the West of Scotland deanery rotate through the department as part of specialty training in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. Advanced trainees in ICM and obstetrics, and ACCS Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine trainees also rotate through. Research fellows working between the academic department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the RAH are also valued members of the team. Find out more in the 'Meet our staff' section.

The RAH is a 650-bedded district general hospital with 9 in-patient (7 elective, 1 trauma, 1 emergency), 2 day surgery, and 2 obstetric operating theatres. There is also a 9-bedded ICU staffed by 8 intensivists. We provide a full range of anaesthetic services, including general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, ENT, eyes, adult dental, obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia, pre-assessment, and an acute pain service supported by specialist pain nurses.  We also provide an anaesthetic service to the day surgery unit at the Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria.
